Prof. Dr. Klaus Gerwert studied physics in Muenster, Germany, and received his doctorate in biophysical chemistry at the University of Freiburg, Germany.

After a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute in Dortmund, Germany, and a Heisenberg-fellowship (DFG) at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, USA, he became professor and chair of the Department of Biophysics at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) in Germany at the age of 36. He founded the SFB 642 (Collaborative Research Center), Germany, leading it from 2004-2016. Simultaneously, he was a fellow of the Max Planck Society (2009-2017) and external director at the Max Planck Partner Institute in Shanghai (2009-2014), China.

Since 2018, he has been the founding executive director of the centre of protein diagnostics (PRODI) at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany (RUB). In 2021, Klaus Gerwert founded betaSENSE GmbH as a spin-off of the Ruhr-University Bochum, managing the company as Chief Executive Officer next to his position as professor in Bochum, Germany.
