Prof. Dr. Klaus Gerwert studied physics in Münster and earned his doctorate in biophysical chemistry at the University of Freiburg.

After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute in Dortmund and a Heisenberg Fellowship (DFG) at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, USA, he became a professor and chair of biophysics at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) in Germany at the age of 36.

He founded SFB 642 (Collaborative Research Centre) and headed it from 2004 to 2016.

He was a Fellow of the Max Planck Society (2009–2017) and an external director at the Max Planck Partner Institute in Shanghai (2009–2014), China. He was a Fellow of the Max Planck Society (2009–2017) and an external director at the Max Planck Partner Institute in Shanghai (2009–2014), China.

Since 2018, he has been the managing founding director of the Centre for Protein Diagnostics (PRODI) at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Germany.

In 2021, Klaus Gerwert founded betaSENSE GmbH as a spin-off of Ruhr University Bochum and manages the company as managing partner alongside his professorship in Bochum.
